The Department of Motor Vehicles may be able to assist you regarding this. An SR22 is a form that shows you have the necessary liability coverages that complies with the state laws.

Some people thinks the SR22 is more expensive than the previous insurance rate. Actually it is more because the amount of insurance policy they need is more than what they are used to carrying.

The financial responsibility law vary in different states. Those people who got involved in a car accident will be mandated to provide proof of financial responsibility or sr22 up to certain minimum liability insurance limits. Almost all drivers acquire car liability insurance to be able to comply with the financial responsibility law.

If you do not have a car you can purchase a non-owners liability SR22 policy, otherwise, you can make an SR22 filing in conjunction with your present or new car insurance policy.

If one individual in the household is mandated to acquire and maintain an sr22, this should not affect the insurance rate and policies of other drivers within the household.

The insurance policies and rate of these other drivers will need to reflect that driver with which is required to carry an sr22 and exclude the driver. If those insurance policies will not exclude the driver and is included in the coverage then those insurance policies and rates could be affected.

If the driver does not have an SR22 on any policy, then the policy in the household will need an SR22 or financial responsibility certificate for the driver.

If I have an sr22, will that cover motorcycle as well?

Since you have a non-owners SR-22 then you don’t need to have coverage on the motorcycle. You should be able to meet the other motorcycle insurance requirements like:

a. should wear a helmet and;
b. should be 21 years old or older

A policy for motorcycle will need to be separate from your SR22 car insurance policy. In addition to that if you have a lien holder on the bike they may require that you hold comprehensive and collision coverage.
